Historia
El Mundial de Velocidad de motoclismo comenzó oficialmente en 1949 con cuatro categorías que, como hoy, dependen de la cilindrada de las motos (125 cc, 250 cc, 350 cc y 500 cc). Y aunque posteriormente se añadieron las categorías de 50 cc y 80 cc, se acabó reduciendo a las tres actuales.
En la historia del mundial ha habido muchos grandes pilotos, como Mike Hailwood, Giacomo Agostini, Ángel Nieto, Santiago Herrero, Carlo Ubbiali, Barry Sheene, etc. Sin embargo, la época dorada del motociclismo llegó en la década de los ochenta, cuando en 500 cc competían pilotos como Kenny Roberts, Eddie Lawson, Wayne Gardner, Wayne Rainey, Kevin Schwantz, Randy Mamola y Mick Doohan.
